Triops longicaudatus: a fascinating and versatile crustacean

The Triops longicaudatus is the most popular and best studied species of the genus Triops. Widespread throughout the world, this species is found mainly in North America, notably in the United States (except Alaska), Canada (Alberta and Saskatchewan), Mexico, as well as in tropical and subtropical regions such as Hawaii, Argentina, the Antilles, the Galapagos Islands, Japan and New Caledonia.

This prehistoric crustacean colonizes temporary freshwater pools, where the temperature fluctuates between 21 and 31°C and where the average depth is around 1.2 m. Although it can adapt to alkaline water, Triops longicaudatus does not tolerate acidic waters with a pH below 6. Its optimal aquatic environment is characterized by fresh water with a pH in the range of 6 to 7.5.

Opportunistic omnivore, Triops longicaudatus feeds on algae, insects and all kinds of organic debris, consuming anything smaller than itself. In captivity, when there is a lack of space, cannibalism is common. It also plays an ecological role by reducing populations of mosquito larvae, helping to combat diseases like West Nile fever.
