Triops cancriformis: the giant of European Triops

The Triops cancriformis, commonly called the great triops, is a freshwater crustacean native mainly to Europe, but also present in the Middle East, notably in Israel. This fascinating aquatic invertebrate is distinguished by its rapid growth: from the larval stage, it doubles its weight every day to reach an impressive size of up to 11 cm in just two months, making it the largest Triops species known.

Once widely distributed in Europe, including France (including Corsica), T. cancriformisis today a rare and endangered species. The destruction of its temporary habitats – due to intensive agriculture, drainage of wetlands, pesticide pollution and canalization of waterways – has greatly reduced its populations. It is now considered an endangered species throughout its range.

  • Average size: 4 to 6 cm (up to 11 cm in ideal conditions)
  • Shelf life: 60 to 90 days
  • Optimal temperature: approximately 22°C

Despite its rarity, Triops cancriformis continues to captivate enthusiasts for its prehistoric appearance and unique adaptive capabilities.
